No wine tour today, as we got going late. The winery is 1.5 hours away, so we need an earlier start. After a breakfast of eggs and toast, we met Jovana and Zoran, walked to the car and then drove to Zemun, an area just south of Belgrade along the Danube.
After waking a bit along the waterfront, we hiked up to Millennium (or Gardoš) tower. A famous landmark, it was built in the late 1800s to celebrate Hungarian civilization. It was built upon the remains of a fortress from the 1500s, which itself was built upon the remains of Roman structures, dating back to the 2nd or 3rd century. That's a theme here, history built on top of history.
After, we took a round-about walk through Zemun, before arriving at our dinner destination, the Sač restaurant. Easily overlooked, and certainly not frequented by tourists, this was an authentic, rustic Serbian restaurant.
Braised veal, potatoes, salad, bread, beer, cevapi (seasoned ground lamb, beef sausages). Simple stuff, but all hand prepared, in a traditional wood fire oven, served in great big portions.
My kind of meal! I rate it A+!
